Investors sometimes act like celebrities (or debatably are celebrities), but most celebrities start in the spotlight then decide to grow their wealth with investments. And the list of these celebrities just keeps getting longer. While some of the most known celebrity investors, such as Ashton Kutcher, have been around for a while, news is always popping up with Hollywood trying to be like their northern neighbors in Silicon Valley.
Last year Bison explored how LPs monitor different facets of GPs in a monitoring blog series – from keeping tabs on fund managers to fundraising efforts, as well as watching portfolio companies mature – there are many different things out there about all of these events. We even made it clear that monitoring the news was important for LPs looking to invest, re-up, or stay on top of the GPs they care about, but where is this information? Where do LPs really turn to find the news they want to read?
Wow! Can you believe it’s almost 2014?! Bison had a very successful year; released some exciting new products and looks forward to bringing users more next year. As we reflect on this year, one thing is for certain, people found value in following the firms they cared about – for good reason too. Let’s look into a few of the big headlines that made people giddier than ever about the PE/VC industry with the 15 most followed firms of the year:
Bison is happy to introduce the Bison Performance Score. This score helps private equity & venture capital investors compare firm’s performance across their portfolio. The Performance Score can be found at the top of every firm page where Bison has collected fund performance data. Below are the current top 20 performing firms on Bison.
We seem to be getting to one of those frothy points in the cycle where public markets only seem to know how to go up despite the underlying conditions. Considering the rising valuations and seemingly widely available debt these days, Bison decided to have a look into the “distant past” at buyout funds raised during 2006 and 2007, the last time market conditions felt a little too good to be true.
That is why at Bison, we are not surprised by the media’s reporting of Tim Geithner joining Warburg Pincus as their President. The news may be a surprise to the February 2013 version of Geithner but he is not the first (and he won’t be the last) former politician to jump to the private equity world.
From the Research Desk…
With all the buzz about TWTR this past week, we decided to look through our database to see who has and will benefit from VC firms’ investments in Twitter. We have examined which pension funds were invested in the funds that were actively investing during the period when the GPs invested in Twitter.
